Fresh, Tasty, Seized!

 

For years, seized fruits rarely caused a stir. Most were canned to survive long smuggling routes. Occasionally, police uncovered fresh produce from hidden hydroponic labs — pleasing to the eye, but bland, watery, and barely edible. Growcery seemed firmly under control… until the day that Major Kottanyi would never forget.

They appeared everywhere, all at once. This new generation of growcery products was different. Not only fresh, but genuinely tasty. Forensic archives had long proven that flavor required soil: a subtle alchemy between plant roots and the microscopic life dwelling around them. Open-air agriculture — the forbidden art — had supposedly been eradicated, stamped out by satellite surveillance years ago.

And yet here it was again, alive, defiant, and delicious.

Who was behind this? Where had they found the soil? And, most dangerous of all… how had they managed to make fruit taste like fruit again?

The Retrolithical Revolution

At long last, humanity has fortunately overcome the CO₂-intense and harmful practices of agricultural mass production. Land has been returned to nature, allowing biodiversity to revive. The issue of food production was solved by fermentation. Healthy, cheap, and clean food is now available in every imaginable flavour, saving cost, cooking and eating time for everyone.

Farming means harming, growing food is a crime!

In accordance with the international NOGAN Treaty that banned outdated farming practices, a special police force was established, focusing on surveilling and preventing “growcery” – the illegal production and sale of fruits and vegetables.

For 20 years, Major Kottanyi and his team of paranoid androids have been successful in spotting secret gardens, hidden hydroponic systems, and indoor plantations.

C, H, N, O, P – the elements of suspicion

Detecting growcery activities was achieved with the help of science and technology. Satellite surveillance systems were developed to spot any kind of cultivated plant growth. As every organic matter is built out of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, and phosphorus, wastewater surveillance played a key role in detecting indoor activities. The use of fertilizers always increases nitrogen and phosphorus levels, and mandatory carbon dioxide sensors in every household can perfectly distinguish between human and plant activities. Also, an increase in electricity consumption, necessary to substitute sunlight, can be a sign of crime.

Rogue nations and fruit trafficking

Unfortunately, the NOGAN Treaty was not signed by all nations. Irrational resistance and resentment against state-of-the-art food culture made the ban on agriculture impossible in some countries. Because of this, the war on fruits escalated, as growcery happened there on a large scale. Illegal harvests, canned or bottled, were trafficked and sold for a fortune to incorrigible eaters.

Fermentation by Tricatel

 

Tricatel is the outcome of a successful corporate merger, holding the exclusive rights to produce and sell state-of-the-art food products. Designed to serve the health and nutrition needs of people precisely, the food is fermented by bacteria and served in Tricatel megafood restaurants. The company offers a wide variety of smart food products, giving people an easy way to reach their recommended health goals or help their children perform better in school.

A suspicious social activity

Public lavatories have always been an urban necessity. But a fast-growing provider of “instant relief”, called My-Hi, has redefined what it means to visit one. They’ve turned a place of urgency into a social hotspot. Wherever a My-Hi toilet appears, crowds gather, waiting patiently for their turn. Among hipsters it has become almost fashionable, though the exchange of digital IDs remains awkward at best.

Pecunia non olet!

The true mystery, however, lies not in their popularity but in their business model. Entry is entirely free. Visitors are not charged money, nor even social credit points. Even stranger, most of the staff are highly qualified life scientists, volunteering their time without pay.

Such generosity raises more questions than answers — a development suspicious enough to warrant round-the-clock police surveillance.

The Microbial Fuel Cell

A microbial fuel cell (MFC) is like a tiny power plant that uses bacteria to make electricity. In a urine-powered MFC, special microbes “eat” the nutrients in urine. As they break down the waste, they release electrons (tiny charged particles). The MFC has two main parts: an anode chamber where the bacteria live and do their work, and a cathode chamber where the electrons travel to. A wire connects the two sides, so when the electrons flow through the wire, that creates an electric current — just like in a battery. At the same time, positively charged particles (protons) move through a special barrier inside the cell. On the other side, the electrons and protons combine with oxygen to form water. This process produces small but useful amounts of clean energy, showing how even waste, such as urine, can be turned into electricity in a sustainable way.

  6. The produce was distributed in exchange for voluntary urine contributions and was consumed by citizens of all social strata, including high-ranking officials.

Legal AnalysisThe central question before this Tribunal is whether the activities of the Mi-Hy Collective constitute a violation of Article 4(1) of the NOGAN Treaty, which states:

“The cultivation, distribution, or consumption of pre-fermentation plant or animal products grown in or upon natural soil or utilising animal-derived nutrients is prohibited on the territory of the Signatory Parties, irrespective of the scale or method of concealment.”

The prosecution argued that the deliberate replication of a soil-like root microbiome and the resulting “natural taste” amounted to an evasion of both the letter and the spirit of the Treaty.The defense countered, and this Tribunal accepts, the following decisive points:

  • The Treaty explicitly prohibits cultivation “in or upon natural soil” and the use of “animal-derived nutrients.” Human urine, when processed through microbial digestion, ceases to be an “animal-derived nutrient” in its original form and becomes a mineral nutrient solution legally indistinguishable from synthetic fertiliser authorised under Annex VII of the Treaty.
  • Hydroponic and aeroponic systems are not regulated under the NOGAN Treaty provided they remain soilless and environmentally neutral. The 2033 Amsterdam Clarification (binding interpretive note) expressly states that “synthetic replication of soil microbial communities for organoleptic purposes shall not, per se, constitute a violation where no natural soil is present.”
  • The Mi-Hy system achieved 100 % closure of water and nutrient loops with zero environmental release. Far from undermining the ecological objectives of the NOGAN Treaty, it advanced them by valorising a waste stream previously treated at high energy cost.

VerdictThe accused collective, designated “Mi-Hy”, is hereby found NOT GUILTY of all charges brought under the NOGAN Treaty.The cultivation method employed does not fall within the prohibited categories of soil-based agriculture or animal-derived fertilisation as defined by the Treaty and its subsequent clarifications. The operation furthermore demonstrated exemplary alignment with the broader sustainability and resource-efficiency goals that motivated the original NOGANN framework.Orders

  1. All seized equipment, biological material, and nutrient solutions shall be returned to the defendants within 14 days.
  2. The NOGAN Enforcement Authority is directed to issue formal authorisation for the continued operation and commercial scaling of the Mi-Hy closed-loop human-waste-to-food system, subject only to standard food-safety monitoring.
  3. Costs of the proceedings are to be borne by the prosecuting Authority.

Closing ObservationTwenty years ago, this Tribunal would have had little hesitation in imposing the severest penalties permitted under the Treaty. Today, the evidence shows that human ingenuity has discovered a pathway that delivers the sensory experience once thought inseparable from ecological harm, without inflicting that harm.The NOGAN era sought to end the crime of unnecessary planetary injury committed in the name of taste. The Mi-Hy Collective has proven that the crime can be rendered obsolete rather than merely policed.Let the record reflect: the age of forbidden fruit is over, not because the prohibition was lifted by sentiment, but because the fruit is no longer forbidden by reason.The defendants are free to go.
