On July 15th, our Mi-Hy team hosted a workshop at the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) Micro: Congress & Exhibition in Milan (July 14-17, 2025). This biennial event brings together microbiologists, researchers, industry leaders, policymakers, and early career scientists from around the world to share research across diverse topics including Eco Innovations, Health Horizons, Biotechnology, and Engagement & Growth.
Led by the Regenerative Architecture, Arts & Design Research Group (KU Leuven, Campus Sint-Lucas, Rachel Armstrong, Ezgi รgรผn Ramalhete, Marie Melcore, Rosie Broadhead, Iลฤฑl Yรผcel), the workshop “Microbes as Milan’s Next Design Revolution” brought together microbiologists and designers to explore how microbes could spark Milan’s next design revolution โ turning the congress into a living laboratory where science meets creativity. This workshop explored sustainable biodesign and urban innovation as part of the Mi-Hy project and SPIKA installation at the 24th Triennale Milano.
The goal: exploring bioreceptivity in regenerative architecture and urban innovation.
Participants worked directly with unique, bioreceptive tiles made from CNC wood, 3D printed clay, and laser-cut felt, which are also featured in the Triennale di Milano exhibition. They inoculated the tiles with local pond water, transforming materials into living surfaces and bringing Milan’s microbiome into the design. Participants also engaged in interdisciplinary dialogue with leading designers and researchers advancing BioDesign boundaries.
Don’t miss out on this podcast, where Rachel Armstrong talks all about microbes, architecture and urban innovations.
